Little is known about Mary Winker other than through public records. Her date of birth is recorded as 11 Nov 1888 in Carthage, SD. She was the first child born to George F. and Catherine (Calhoun) Winker.
She was married to Julius Arndt on October 16, 1905, when she was 16. They had two daughters, Mary (b. 16 July 1906) and Beatrice (b. 1 June 1908). Both girls were born in South Dakota, presumably in De Smet. Julius L. Arndt and family are found on the 1910 Federal Census living in De Smet, SD. He was 30 years old (b. abt. 1880), born in Germany and is listed as a laborer in a Blacksmith shop. Also listed are his wife Mary, age 21, and daughters Mary (4) and Beatrice (2).
The 1920 Federal Census shows Mary Arndt, age 31, single head of the family, and her two daughters, Mary (13) and Beatrice (11), living in De Smet, SD, along with her mother, Kate Winker.
Mary Arndt was married to John Poole on 15 Feb 1926 in Sioux Falls. The marriage record indicates that Mary Arndt was a widow, age 37, and living in Sioux Falls. John Poole was 27 years old, and from Charlotte, Iowa. They were married in the Catholic Church.
(Note: Since the above mentioned Marriage Record shows Mary Arndt as widowed, and Julius Arndt was not on the 1920 census, it must be presumed that he died some time before 1920.)
On the 1930 Federal Census, Mary Poole was living in Sioux Falls with her daughters Beatrice (age 21) and Catherine M. (age 3-1/2), and is shown as divorced.
She is mentioned in the obituary of her mother in 1932 as "Mrs. Mary Pool of Sioux Falls".
Mary Poole died 29 Aug 1944 and is buried in St. Michael's Cemetery, Sioux Falls. (See photo below.)
In an e-mail dated June 4, 2005, Bridget Hoveland wrote: "About Mary (Winker) Arndt/Poole's daughters. I always heard of the older one as Helen and I also saw some place the name Hilary. Also I think her husband's name was Martin Killearney. I do remember meeting the two women several years ago at a family picnic but other than that I never knew them."
Beatrice Arndt married Royal Wesley Waldrip of Sturgis, SD, on 4 Aug 1931 in Dell Rapids, SD. Beatrice Waldrip died 19 Sep 1988 in Springfield, OR. Royal Waldrip died about a month later, on 17 Oct 1988 in Springfield, OR.
There is a record of a land sale to a Maria Winker in Jackson County, South Dakota, recorded in 1907, but it is doubtful that it is the same person.
